SUSMILE PROJECT: Successful online learning for sustainable last mile logistics

26/05/2021

We are happy to announce the launching of the SUSMILE project (“Successful online learning for sustainable last mile logistics” project), a 2-year ERASMUS+ Strategic Partnership that brings together 8 partners from 4 European countries that will contribute to build digital education readiness by addressing this challenge through the provision of effective and inclusive teaching tools, materials, resources and methods to ensure distance learning in the area of sustainable last mile logistics.

The SUSMILE project, coordinated by the Mobility and Logistics Cluster of the Basque Country is funded by the European Commission, through SEPIE, the Spanish National Agency for International Education, and its final aim is to develop an eLearning course on MOOC (Massive Open Online Course), integrating high quality digital eLearning resources for VET providers to be able to train their students online on fresh, practical and innovative concepts related to sustainable last mile logistics.

What is the importance of this project today, during the pandemic?

VET teachers and trainers have faced many challenges in their efforts to respond to the current COVID-19 crisis. Distance learning measures have shown lack of adapted means, training materials and tools throughout Europe and across all VET qualifications. The transport and logistics sector is also sensitive to the challenges of the VET system that have arisen with the pandemic, especially in the last mile delivery with the increase of online commerce (e-commerce).

In this context, the SUSMILE open educational resource will contain the following innovative online resources and tools:

  • eLearning modules to address initial and continuing education, including theory and evaluation materials, to help the user acquire key knowledge in areas such as last mile distribution schemes, warehouse/ consolidation centres/ picking stations, routing systems, technologies, environmental impact and processes and product care. At the same time, this eLearning module will be completed with an adaptive learning kit to provide varied learning materials for the students and help them understand last mile logistics in a dynamic way, with verbal and interpersonal sessions.
  • A Serious Game in which the player can apply the knowledge acquired through eLearning and put the acquired skills into practice through the aerial/isometric visualization of a city.

The SUSMILE Consortium, composed by 8 multidisciplinary partners, including sectorial associations, VET providers and research and consultancy companies from Spain, France, Italy and the Czech Republic, will work in a cooperative way, implementing an innovative and engaging methodology that will include a testing phase of the developed materials, together with several multiplier events in each of the participating countries.
